Catholics are called to minister to the world, caring for and evangelizing others as the apostles did. But in order to do this successfully, we need to understand the world and our fellow man with the eyes of Christ. So how should Catholics see the world? Msgr. James Shea unpacks the mystery of this vision.
Romans 5:1-5
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have PEACE with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
2 ... and we celebrate in hope of the glory of God.
3 And not only this, but we also celebrate in our TRIBULATIONS, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;
4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, HOPE;
5 and HOPE DOES NOT DISAPOINT US, because the LOVE of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
It’s OK to grieve this terrible loss. But our job isn’t over. Regardless of what’s in the Michigan constitution, what’s in the Gospel matters more. And the Gospel tells us our job is to love — whoever and wherever we’re called.
CHRIST’s WORDS OF CONSOLATION AFTER PROP 3 DEFEAT” by CHRISTY WHITING:
Feeling discouraged by the passing of Proposal 3? Read this. Reproduced below are words of encouragement that came in prayer to Christy Whiting, Director of Discipleship and Evangelization at
Saint Mary, Williamston.
“Yesterday morning I was praying about Prop 3's defeat, and asked Jesus what He wanted to say,” explains Christy.
“I wrote this as an encouragement for my parish, but it is really for everyone who ‘fought like Heaven’.” Here is what Christy says she heard from Christ in prayer. She writes:
When Jesus died, it looked like Hell had won the victory. Right now, it looks like Hell won the fight over Proposal 3. The right to life for Michigan's unborn children is dead.
But Hell didn't win when Jesus died. Instead, God used that "defeat" to obtain the ultimate victory over sin and death.
Hell can't win over us, either. We are members of Jesus' Body, the Church. Jesus is "the resurrection and the life" (Jn 11:25), and we are united to Him through baptism. Jesus doesn't lose. Where there is death, He brings life - because He is Life (Jn 14:6).
This isn't the end of our story. This is more like Good Friday. Easter Sunday is coming. It may look very dark until then. Holy Saturday did, too. It looked like God was doing nothing.
But what was He actually doing? He was releasing the souls of the dead and opening Heaven! His actions were hidden from plain sight, but He was bringing about the ultimate victory.
We can't see what Jesus is doing right now, either. But that doesn't mean the fight is over. Rather, it means that we are "fighting like Heaven" more than we may realize.
Heaven only allows death to come so that there will be a greater victory.
"We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose" (Rom 8:28). This is God's promise. Its truth has been witnessed throughout history. And "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" (Heb 13:8). Have hope!
Grieve the loss of this election, but don't get discouraged. Hell would love it if we despair and give up.
Hold onto the cross. Hold onto the reality of Jesus' resurrection. Keep "fighting like Heaven" to release souls from the hell that is this culture of death. Listen to the Holy Spirit daily and continue working with Heaven to build a culture of life.
Know that when the victory comes, we will have one heavenly celebration!
